I know the heartache makes Aster want to ask how, hating that Dan does know. It makes him want to not ask, so Dan doesn't have to revisit something painful. He just pauses in cleaning the blood off Dan's temple, listening attentively.

"She had control over you," he repeats, reaching for the first aid kit to clean Dan's wound. "And shared her feelings, how? Did she make you feel them? Did she say anything?"
