Dan looks crestfallen for a moment, unsure about what he said that’s upset Elle so unexpectedly, but then she apologizes to him and-

Elle hasn’t tripped either of those wires, so Dan cracks up, laughing not at her and not at himself, just at how silly the situation is.
“Well, ain’t hardly your fault I ain’t book smart.” Laughing so soon after a smoke break makes him cough, so he catches it in his shoulder, grinning when he’s done. “So, can I open it now or should I wait until I’m alone?”
