"You don't got to. That's the beauty of it." Dan wishes more people were on the same page as him. He gets lonely sometimes, thinking of himself as someone on the far end of an extreme with so few people in sight. Without the family that raised him up with these values, he's alone. But he does appreciate a diversity of viewpoints, and he's made his peace with his pacifism being an outlier.

He isn't surprised Miguel finds some of it objectionable. He's just pleasantly surprised that Miguel finds the grace to agree to disagree with Dan in such a gentle way.
