SLEIGH BELLS RING ❄ MINGLE

SLEIGH BELLS RING

Those that escape from the theater all seem to come out through the same doors. When they get there, they can see that the theater isn't actually a building. There's only a free-standing set of theater doors on the playground. At the rear side of them is a brick wall.

Those that exit will find they can't re-enter.

None of the humans have seemed to notice the door or them, even those driving by.

Not everyone escapes at the same time. It comes in fits and starts, them filtering of the theater. Some can walk out mostly unharmed, some limp out, some come out supporting each other.

What they find outside is... uncanny. There in the playground is a massive sleigh, but one that looks not-exactly-traditional, with equipment and boosters that look almost like a mix of technology and something magical.

It's been expanded into many carriages, almost like a roller coaster. Harnessed to it are eight massive reindeer, champing slightly at their bits. It appears the people that attacked and created the theater are at least long gone. That means that as people slowly filter out they can check up on each other, provide first aid, and reassure each other.

OOC DETAILS

Status effects: Any injuries or damage that happens to a character will stick when they leave the Multiplex. That means that someone that gets facehugged by a facehugger will have an alien larva problem that may be causing some serious indigestion soon. Anyone that gets Borg-nanited through the neck will start having the nanites take over them. However the myth healing will slow these processes down until they can get to the Pole, and there are magical means at the Pole to help the characters survive this.

First Aid/Other Supplies: The sleigh will have magically anticipated their needs. While it won't have the antivenom for Kaa because only a magical plant that grows at the Pole can cure the bites, it will have plenty of well-stocked general first aid kits. Applying first aid can help the myth healing heal someone more quickly and is important for injured characters that opted out of the myth healing.

Timing: People can bendytime the timing of when their characters have escaped to play in this and "Let's All Go To The Movies" at the same time. People can also intro here late if they need to wrap some things up in the other post first.

Intro: Players can use this post to intro instead if that's their preference. You can just assume your characters had to run from scary things in the theater and either handwave their circumstances, or assume your character found a way out more quickly than others.

...Synthetic pathogen?

[ Once it was clear that the combat was over and his face didn't need to be protected from surprise attacks, he simply keeps the mask winked away. He gets the feeling he'll be getting to know all these people well enough. In this case, it at least allowed for some manner of sympathy to show through after giving Boimler a visual inspection.

He wasn't a medical doctor, but he had worked with patients from time to time when his daily life involved more genetic engineering. And when that work was for Alchemax, you see some messed up things in the archives when you get high up enough in the food chain.

They didn't meet on a good front, but Miguel did go out of his way to try and protect the guy. It didn't please him to see Boimler look like he was waiting for whatever illness he had to take him.

[The look Boimler gives him is high grade "Oh it's this asshole." But they had tried to have each other's back there. Even if he was an idiot who didn't know how to pick his battles. There were moments they probably would've been a lot more screwed in that fight if they'd been alone.]

[So while he thinks he's a moron that doesn't know when to run, he also can't deny that after he had thoroughly compromised them and unnecessarily put them in danger by insisting on staying...spider skull guy at least had made it that he didn't get skewered.]

That place had a species of aliens from back home running around. The Borg. They're a cybernetic species that attacks and assimilates different species and their technology.

They use nanoprobes that rewrite someone's biological processes and assemble technology in their body to turn them into a drone. I have probably, oohh [he briefly closes one eye and bobs his head back and forth doing the math] maybe twenty-five, thirty minutes left before I go into a temporary coma and neural restructuring starts.

That's how they reproduce. They capture and change people. Until you're not you anymore and you're one of them instead. Part of their Collective, absorbed into a hivemind.

[He shakes his head.]

Even without the actual Collective here for my mind to get completely subsumed to, the nanoprobes are still going to build a neural transceiver and rewrite my brain.

I see. I'm sorry.

[ He has most certainly had to say 'I'm sorry, (name)' to people receiving horrific news enough times to not miss a beat. It was sincere, though. He would prefer death to losing his mind like that. ]

I understand why the situation looks grim. This is a full century before they invented cellular regenerators back on my world.

[ Miguel... doesn't want to promise things he can't deliver on. He is confident he could figure out how to reverse the infection if he had his lab and Lyla with him. Nanomachines were a thing he worked with every day. With just his field gear, though, he's as stuck as the rest of them. ]

Consider that things might not work here the same way they would in your dimension. All the constructs in the maze were works of magic. The rules don't necessarily apply.

[ Bringing in a bit of hope was also part of being Spider-Man, wasn't it? It was worth a try. ]

The fact that I have things growing out of my face and [he winces again as the nerves in his spine jangle] definitely along my spine seems to suggest it's similar enough.

[He closes his eyes tight, a few tears plopping down, but he quickly wipes them away and opens his eyes again. Even now, there's a measure of decorum he's trying to maintain.]

[He presses his lips together tightly and nods a few abrupt nods.]

Worth it, though. I'm not seeing many other people come out with infections.

[Some seemed to have some kind of poisoning darkening their veins but no sprouting implants and it was in limbs, not the neck, with bite marks. Snake bites maybe? The Borg always went for the neck. Only one other person so far seems to have the classic neck-spread pattern.]

Ensign Mariner, the lieutenant, and I managed to trap a contingent of them in a hallway by collapsing the ceiling in front and behind them. [Which, smartly, left them trapped rather than dead and regenerating in a screen somewhere.] We left the adjoining theater clear for people to bypass it.

It was a big enough squad they could've assimilated the entire group.

[So he's going take at least some small comfort in the face of his total ego death about being the only one that got screwed. He knows he handled that situation bravely, and it was his plan the lieutenant had gone with.]

[Were some weird little knife-wielding bastard not running around below knee level, they would've pulled it off with nearly no casualties.]

[ Ah. The tears soften up his expression a little. Miguel isn't without empathy, it seems. ]

Similar enough isn't the same. Did they not go over control variables at the academy?

[ Maybe with more self-introspection, he would apply this advice to himself and certain theories about the multiverse, but he's not making that connection right now. He has found himself in the unusual position of needing to play the optimist for this poor Ensign in the middle of possibly being Borged.

So he'll try to be the optimist.

Talking is usually better than letting the other guy sit there and lament his mortality for twenty minutes, anyway.

And what's the point of having hope if it gets crushed in the next thirty minutes?

[It'll just feel worse as he slips away.]

Look, I will maybe entertain the tiniest bit of optimism if it seems like there's some deviation in the assimilation progression. But I won't really know for another thirty minutes or so.

[When it comes time for anything that should start affecting his brain.]

I'd rather assume the worst and wind up happily surprised, than have hope that just gets crushed. [Which is maybe not the kind of thing someone else wants to see someone go through. But he knows himself well enough to know it's what he needs.] I want to spend this time just...existing. And remembering the things that made me me. And focusing on the fact that at least I did some good.

[There's at least a peace that can come of that. Of accepting that sometime you can't control every outcome. That you just have to wait and see what the universe has in store, even if it might be bad.]

[ Frown. He was this 🤏 close to dropping the 'My end of the Multiverse is about to explode in less than 24 shocking hours' if they really wanted to talk about Hope and Ticking Time Bombs. But he's not that pissed off at Boimler in particular, so empathy continues to win his inner clash for that moment.

With a grumble and a very set jaw, he addresses his watch and goes for the softer option, despite himself. There. A secretly set 20 minutes to give the guy his ray of hope if they make it through.

You ran off before you told me your name, why don't we start with that?

[ A Questions game to kill the time. It's not like they had anything better to do. ]

[At the grumbling, Boimler briefly gives him a slightly wry expression, as if to say, "Sorry, am I suffering ego death in a way that you don't approve of? Would you like me to die in a perkier way?" But he at least doesn't say it because Miguel gracefully moves on. He'll hold back on the sarcasm at someone just casting about for a way to offer some kind of comfort.]

Brad Boimler. Ensign Brad Boimler. Of the USS Cerritos. It's a starship.

I never got your name either.

[ And so they kind of half-glare at each other warily, but Brad over here still gives Miguel his name. So he'll return the favor. ]

Miguel O'Hara. I'm the Spider-Man of Nueva York.

[ Would a Star Trek side character even know what a Spider-Man is? Miguel supposes it either won't matter in 20 minutes or they'll get to know each other enough to elaborate. ]

So, I presume you've seen your share of different worlds? You must have a favorite.

I'm sorry, let's walk this back a little, before I talk about alien planets.

[He gestures vaguely with a hand in a rolling it back gesture.]

What's a Spider-Man?

[He's not really sounding incredulous or anything, he's just dead curious.]

It's just, like, you dropped it so casually like it's a thing I should be able to figure it out.

.... like the superhero?

[ nope. no recognition in his eyes. ]

I have spider powers. I protect the city.

[ for the fourth time today, he points out the spider legs of the Spider™ on his chest. It's not just a skull!]

My job has been a bit more multiversal as of late.
